What Does Motorcycle Insurance Cover?
Motorbike insurance, like other auto insurance products, is mandatory in Ontario for riders. You may choose a seasonal coverage option if you only ride your bike in the warmer months or opt for a year-round policy.
Storing your motorcycle for a season may change the type of protection you need. Fortunately, Ron Johnston Insurance offers standard and extended policies so you can customize your insurance to your riding style.
Standard Motorbike Insurance Coverage
Under the umbrella of your motorcycle insurance protection, there is a standard for coverage. This includes:
Collision and Accident Benefits – In a collision, this coverage pays for the repair of your motorcycle. If your motorcycle is written off, it covers the value of your bike minus your deductible. Accident benefits coverage applies for additional protection in medical expenses, tow fees, emergency services costs, and funeral expenses.
Direct Compensation – If you are not at fault in a collision, but your bike is damaged and needing repair, direct compensation allows your insurance company to pay for repairs. Third-party insurers may take months to file a claim from the other driver. With direct compensation, you don’t need to wait around for the other insurance company to do their job.
Liability – If you harm another rider, another driver, or the property of another individual on your bike, liability coverage keeps you from paying out of pocket. Liability protection includes coverage on medical bills, legal fees, and repairs.
Extended Motorcycle Insurance Coverage
If standard motorbike insurance doesn’t provide enough coverage for your needs, you can discuss extended insurance options with our brokers.
All Perils – Perils are the risks you may encounter on the road, or while your bike is in storage. Some bike insurance includes a set list of perils, including fire, explosion, theft, falling objects, etc. Your bike is covered from all risks in an all perils policy, not just a specified set.
Loss if Use – If you cannot use your motorcycle due to damage or theft, your loss of use coverage provides you with an alternative ride until your bike is back.
Waiver of Depreciation – You may be eligible for a waiver of depreciation with your bike insurance. When you buy a new motorcycle, it loses value as soon as it leaves the lot. If your bike is in an accident and replaced later, your insurance policy will only cover up to the current value. A waiver of depreciation keeps your bike value stable for up to 36-months after it is purchased, ensuring you don’t lose money on a later claim evaluation.
You can add optional coverage on your motorcycle accessories, so that your helmet, gear, and specialty equipment is protected under your policy. Contact our brokers to learn more.
Frequently Asked Motorbike Insurance Questions
At Ron Johnston Insurance, we’ve done our job right when our clients have all the facts. Here, we’ve included some of our most frequently asked bike insurance questions, so you understand all the fine print in your policy.
Yes. Liability coverage protects you when another rider is injured while you are driving. This coverage counts toward emergency services and medical expenses. Before taking passengers, however, be sure that your bike is equipped for two, and that your insurance policy acknowledges this feature.
Absolutely. As long as your bike has been inspected, you can get coverage on a custom-built motorcycle. You may require a different type of coverage or pay more for your premium. This depends on your insurance provider. Cruisers, off-road motorbikes, and other motorbike products can also receive coverage.
You don’t need to bundle to obtain motorbike insurance; however, you can save money on your policy if you do. If you have home insurance, car insurance, business insurance, or any other insurance product, it often makes more sense to bundle your bike insurance and save.
