The types of coverage available depend on whether you select a standard RV insurance policy, or an extended policy with customized add-ons. Within the scope of a basic recreational vehicle insurance contract, you can expect coverage on:
Collision repair – If your RV is in an accident, or damaged by one of the perils listed in your policy, your insurer will pay to repair and replace your equipment. Collision repair coverage also applies to damage repairs to another rider’s vehicle if you are found at fault in an accident.
Campsite coverage – If you are at a campsite and your camper becomes unlivable, your campsite and vacation protection provide alternative sleeping accommodations.
Towing and emergency services – Towing and emergency services coverage ensures you always have the funds necessary to get you out of a tight place. Whether you need a tow or an ambulance, your RV insurance has you covered.
Uninsured – While it is illegal to drive on Ontario roads without insurance, some drivers do. If you are in an accident with an uninsured vehicle, your uninsured coverage will pay for repairs, medical fees, and legal fees, no matter who is at fault in the collision.
Extended options bespoke RV insurance include:
Food spoilage – If you are camping and the power goes, your food may spoil. Food spoilage coverage is to help provide funds to replace freezer goods that rot during a power outage.
Water damage – Water and sewage issues are not commonly included in a standard RV policy. However, some insurance providers allow you to extend your policy to cover water damage, rust, and flood damage.
Total loss replacement – If your RV is damaged beyond repair, total loss replacement pays for a new vehicle up to an allotted amount detailed in your contract. You are still required to pay your deductible in this instance. For example, if your deductible is $1,000 and your RV is worth $20,000, you may be entitled up to $19,000, depending on the structure of your policy.
Frequently Ask Recreational Vehicle Insurance Questions
At Ron Johnston Insurance, we believe that having all of the information is the best way to make an informed choice on RV insurance.
Probably not. As long as you’re an insured driver, the rental agency you book through will likely have RV insurance of their own. However, it’s important to ask questions, and read the fine print before accepting the keys. If you’re concerned about liability, talk to your Ron Johnston Insurance broker about adding rental insurance to your bundle.
RV insurance policies are designed for seasonal use. If you live in your recreational vehicle as a home, it might be better to invest in homeowners insurance. This depends on the size of your mobile home, where it is stationed, and what kind of attached or detached structures are included. Our brokers are well-versed in home insurance and RV insurance products. If you’re not sure, we’re here to help.
In Ontario, you are not legally obligated to insure your RV unless it is a class A motorized unit. If your RV is a single camper with a motor, you are required by law to insure it, the same way you would any other vehicle on the road. For smaller units, like ATVs, you also require insurance if you are taking the unit anywhere on-road. This includes crossing from an off-road pathway onto another off-road pathway by means of a paved road.
