What Does Farm Insurance Cover?
At Ron Johnston Insurance, we know that farm managers are busy enough without also worrying about financial risk 24/7. Fortunately, our agriculture insurance policies cover a wide range of standard and extended protection options, including:
Property Damage
The buildings on your property run the risk of damage from fire, inclement weather, explosion, theft, vandalism, or falling objects. This includes:
- Barns
- Farmhouses
- Unattached structures like fences, decks, sheds, and docks.
- Farmland
- Belongings inside on-site structures.
Property damage coverage helps pay for repairs, replacements, or necessary upgrades. This saves you money spent on unforeseen costs, so you can continue running your farm.
Not all property damage is covered in a standard agriculture insurance policy. If you are worried about potential flooding, tornadoes, earthquakes, or pest control issues, speak to your broker about extended policy options.
General Liability
No matter how well-trained your employees are with safety precautions, mistakes on a working farm can happen. General liability protection ensures you are covered if someone is injured by or on your property.
An example of a general liability issue could be an employee working with livestock and getting kicked or bitten. If that employee requires medical attention above Canadian medical coverage, your insurance policy helps manage these costs.
General liability also covers damage caused by products manufactured by your company. Suppose a customer claims the milk they purchased from your farm was spoiled and caused food poisoning. In that case, your general liability insurance acts as a financial buffer against court costs and other fees associated with the claim.
Loss of Income
Even successful farms have bad yields from time to time. If weather, animal illness, property damage or other unforeseen perils cause farm closures or unusable products, you are protected against loss of income. Your insurance will cover costs like:
- Rent or mortgage payments
- Hydro and water bills
- Livestock feed
This coverage is meant to help with bills and upkeep until income returns to normal and your farm is self-sufficient once more.
There are limitations to loss of income coverage with farm insurance. Most insurers won’t cover crop spoilage or loss. Being thorough when you select agriculture insurance is the best way to ensure you have all the protection you need if a problem arises.
Livestock
Animals are unpredictable, which is why your livestock coverage helps pay for medical issues, and replacement if animals get lost, pass away, or stolen.
Equipment
Farms use multiple types of equipment to function every day. From tractors and plows to combines and seeders, your equipment is covered against damage or loss.

It depends. If you farm part-time from home, you may be covered by a combination of home insurance and general liability insurance. Farm insurance coverage depends on various factors, including the amount of revenue you achieve each year, the type of farming you do, how much property you own, and relevant risks in your business plan. Working closely with your Ron Johnston broker, you can find the right policy to cover your part-time farming without paying more than you have to.
Speaking to a broker is the best way to ensure you qualify for agriculture insurance. However, the province of Ontario does offer some guidelines to go by. To be considered a farm by the province, you must:
- Earn at least $10,000 but less than $2 million.
- Have up to 20 full-time employees.
- Have a farm registration number.
- The farm is used for livelihood, not a hobby.
Yes. The liability portion of your farm insurance policy will help with unforeseen costs in boarding horses. Be sure to check on included perils before filing a claim. If a horse is injured on your watch, it may not be covered if hurt by an unincluded peril.
